Indoor PE will be on a Wednesday and Outdoor PE will be on a Thursday. Children can come to school dressed ready in their PE kits.
In Year 1 our Cornerstones topics this year are:
In Year 1 we have adopted the approach of Early Years Provision for the first few weeks. Children will have the opportunity to explore through enhanced provision to continue developing their personal, social, creative and independent skills. Alongside this they will benefit from focussed inputs and small group activities in phonics, maths, topic and writing. Children will also take part in sessions to support their fine motor skills, handwriting and reading. We will continue to use the Little Wandle scheme to teach phonics and reading skills. As Year 1 continues the children will progress to a more formal style of learning. We follow a Mastery approach to English through the programme ‘Pathways to Write.’ Units of work are delivered using high-quality texts and children in all year groups are given varied opportunities for writing. Skills are built up through repetition within the units, and children apply these skills in the writing activities provided. Many opportunities for widening children’s vocabulary are given through the Pathways to Write approach and this builds on the extensive work we do in school to provide our children with a rich and varied vocabulary.
In maths the children will continue to develop knowledge of numbers up to 100 with an emphasis on recognising number bonds and patterns. They will develop their knowledge and understanding of calculation by using concrete resources and pictorial representations. They will have daily mental maths sessions in order to embed these skills.
Children will engage in reading in school including a ‘cosy club’ session at the end of each day to expose them to different genres and expand their vocabulary. We encourage children to read at least 3 times a week at home.
We will continue to use Tapestry to upload observations about your child’s progress and achievements in school.
Here are some of the ‘cosy club’ books we plan to use this year:
How will my child be assessed in Year 1?
Throughout the year, our Year 1 teaching team will be assessing children against the National Curriculum for Year 1, making observations and gathering evidence to determine how children are attaining in reading, writing and mathematics by the end of Year 1. This end of year teacher judgement will be shared with parents through your child’s end of year report and will show parents whether your child is working:
Updates regarding how your child is attaining will also be shared at our autumn and spring term parents’ consultations in November and March.
Y1 Phonics Screening Check
In addition to ongoing teacher assessments in reading, writing and mathematics; children in Year 1 undertake a statutory assessment in phonics in early June. The ‘Phonics Screening Check (PSC)’ involves each child working on a 1:1 basis with their teacher in a quiet room to read a list of forty words. Half of the words are real words, which children should be able to read using their phonics skills to segment and blend words if needed, and the other half of the words are ‘nonsense’ words or ‘alien’ words. These words are depicted by a picture of an alien and are made up words, formed using sounds the children will be familiar with. An extract from a past phonics screening check paper is shown below.

There is no time limit for the phonics screening check and children will be familiarised with the check throughout their time in Year 1. In previous years, children who have correctly identified 32 or more of the 40 words in the check have ‘met the end of year expectation’ for phonics in Year 1. Children who have scored 31 or less ‘have not met the end of year expectation’. These children will continue to be taught discrete phonics sessions in Year 2 and will re-take the phonics screening check in June of Year 2.
For more information, please click on the following link – Phonics screening check: information for parents to read the leaflet produced by the Standards & Testing Agency (STA) regarding last year’s check.
There is an expectation that the children read at least three times a week and record their reading in their reading records so they can earn raffle tickets. Children should also be accessing NumBots weekly to consolidate their Maths learning.
