Lunchtimes at Hampton College Secondary Phase
As you are aware, we have been piloting a later lunchtime during this academic year. We have also changed our school caterers in the last four months and reviewed our queuing systems. I feel that we have gone a long way towards improving the students’ experiences at lunchtime, although there is still room for further development and improvement.
Having recently evaluated the change and consulted with staff at the college, the leadership team is recommending that we keep the later lunch for the foreseeable future. Teachers report the following benefits:
- A long, calm, focused morning for learning.
- A short afternoon, with students showing improved motivation, compared to the two hour afternoon.
We know that we still have to keep an open mind about change in the longer term, as the school building reaches its maximum capacity of 210 students per year group.
As I have mentioned in newsletters this year, we agreed to give parents an opportunity to express their views. If you do have a view about the timings of lunch or lunchtime arrangements generally, please do get in touch by emailing us at:
I would be very grateful if you could share your thoughts by the end of Friday 29 April. This will enable me to take your views into consideration ahead of finalising arrangements for the next school year and to give the Governing Body a summary of parents’ views.
We will also be polling students in the next week too and will take account of student voice before moving forward.
